Again a 5 star rating for JL Murray, but the truth is that this book in fact deserves a 6 star rating. Niki Slobodian fans will understand what I mean when they read The Devil was an Angel. This is a beautiful story which is beautifully written and in my opinion this was the best Niki Slobodian book yet. J.L. Murray did an excellent job as always. The first few chapters are extremely emotional, and I strongly advise readers to have a box of tissues nearby, but this is so necessary to tell the re [...]

Today's review is on The Devil Was an Angel by J.L. MurrayI have to say that I was really on the fence about this fourth installment of the Niki Slobodian series. I was just so saddened at the loss of Sam in book three that I didn't know if I wanted to find out what would happen next. As Mrs. Murry will attest, I basically begged and pleaded for her to bring him back and to let him and Niki find happiness. All I got back though was "you never know what might happen." So here I was, book in hand; [...]

Another amazingly awesome read by the amazingly awesome author J.L. Murray, whose blend of horror and fantasy is an amazingly awesome thing. (Yes, I am stuck on that phrase this morning.) The Devil Was An Angel is 4th in the Niki Slobodian urban fantasy series of angels, demons, ghosts, and paranormal detectives. In this installment, we get to deal with a lot of the fallout of the last book - Sam is dead, Niki has become Death and is riddled with guilt and sadness, and Gage has gone missing. In [...]

It's a shame there's only one book left in this series because it's really taken off. The first two books kind of just seemed like the author warming up and trying to figure out what she wanted to do. Then in the 3rd book she seemed to find her footing and this one was just awesome. THE REST OF THE REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS so read at your own risk.I know a lot of people were rather upset that Sam died, but he never really grew on me and I was always just a bit upset that a series where the word [...]

Well, this time I took Sam's betrayal a lot easier. Still sad tho.1st read from July 26 to 27, 2013 Damn. Another awesome book and now I have to wait a year for the next one. What can I say? This was brilliant as always. I simply love this story. Niki is one of my favorite characters and the more I know about her, Lucifer and Gage, the more I want to read about them. They are absolutely fascinating and the main plot is creative, fast-paced and incredibly exciting. I honestly thought this one was [...]

There really are no words to describe how awesomely-epic this book is. Once in a while you will come across a book and just know that its gonna be big, this is such a book. At the end of book three I really did wonder how things were gonna go but did not see any of it coming at all, I was totally blind sided but in the best way. This really is the best in the series so far. I found myself days (and several books) later still thinking bout parts of the story that stood out. The book really was em [...]

3.5I think the minor UF genre has its own gems. And I found JL Murray's Niki Slobodan series such. The fourth book deals with the aftermath of the war between Angels and Devils (more or less). Sam is dead and Niki is left with his job, his memories and guilt. This is mostly a "passage" story in which the world is "righted" after the near Armageddon and characters learn a few very unpleasant truths. I have to say that this series has no overly overt overall arch (excuse the punI'm too sleepy to c [...]

J.L. Murray does it againJ.L. Murray does it againI chose the 5 Star rating for this because I really like the Author and I could actually feel the Anger and the Love between 2 opposites that you would think would never hook up. I could feel every emotion I could smell the flesh burning and you are the main person so when I read books I like to be able to smell the good and the bad and I like to have my mind where I can see and hear everything even though it can get to be too much. J.L. Murray w [...]

Who is good and who is the bad? I love how everything mix up and then when you think you've everyone figured out good and bad change again. It's unsettling and gives quite a rush of adrenaline every time, maybe because you realize that the orientation has changed just in the middle of a life/death situation.I'm not really sure how I feel about the Sam thing. I don't really like how immature Niki is about her feeling and her understanding of her feelings. Also the star is taken of because sometim [...]

I really enjoyed this book and although I haven't read any other books in the series it wasn't hard to follow or figure out who the characters were and what was going on. Niki was a strong female character and I loved her. She didn't take crap from anyone but she was a bitch or a child about stuff which happens a lot when authors try to make their heroine's strong. I loved Lucifer as well. He was crazy but honest and I think that is what Niki needed at the time. The story was action packed and i [...]

I think that this has been the best book in the series and I am looking forward to the next installment of Niki Slobadian novels. I love the fact that Niki is not perfect and she feels so deeply, also that the relationships she has are broken but they still work. This series kind of reminds me of Stacia Kane's Downside novels it has the same darkness although it has more angels, demons and spirits. There is action, mystery, love and self growth, really what more can you ask for :)

    • Christina says:

I, obviously, haven't read this because it hasn't been finished, BUT taking the author and the three previous books . . . I have no doubt it will be fantastic!

    • Schuyler Greene says:

These things just keep getting better and better. This one might have been my favorite.

    • Christine Hayes says:

Wow, reading turned me upside down. Niki has lots of problems to solve and a new father. As usual I am not disappointed and counting the days for the next one to come out.

"The Devil Was An Angel" finds our Herione, Nikki Slobodian reeling with her new job as death. She is hurting, weighed down by helping various souls cross over to the other side. To make matters worse, she is seeing an increasing trend of violent murders being committed on families including babies and unfortunately the murders are escalating.Just as Nikki feels she can take no more, she hears Samael talking to her. He wants her to bring him back to life but first he warns her that her friend, B [...]

    • Nereid says:

Well Niki is back, still grieving for Sam and trying to reconcile herself to being death. Talk about an adjustment, her life was stressful enough when she was alive but being death is definitely no picnic. So much is going on in this book, dealing with her guilt over Sam sacrificing himself to save her and feeling like she is losing everyone she cares about, Niki is shocked when Sam's brother who happens to be Lucifer shows up asking for her help. How can she possibly help anyone when she can't [...]

    • Sadie Forsythe says:

I'd say this was a great end to the series, but I get the distinct impression that it isn't actually the end. Rather, The Devil was an Angel is simply the most recent book published in the series. I'd certainly be interested in reading more if Ms. Murray decides to write them, but I'd be disappointed if it turned into one of those series that never actually concludes. I find that so unsatisfying.I was plenty satisfied with this book, however. Niki continued learning about herself and her abiliti [...]

Being Death Is Not A CakewalkThis series must be read in order. The first book is Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea. The second book is The Devil Is A Gentleman. The third book is Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. This is the fourth book. I can't wait to read the fifth (and sadly final) book The Devil's Backbone! With Sam Unsung Niki doesn't really know what to do. Grief is eating her alive, Sofi won't wake up, and Bobby is missing. Being Death is painful and tragic. She keeps finding who [...]

I enjoyed this very different paranormal book about demons, death, and Lucifer. The writing was good and kept me reading at a fast pace; however, there were a few grammatical, typos, and areas that could use some improvement. Overall, it was a good read and I look forward to more of this series.
